Phenix Center Concludes Meetings in Amman to Discuss Code of Conduct on Decent Working Conditions in Jordan’s Agricultural Sector
Amman – July 24, 2025
The Phenix Center, in cooperation with Terre des hommes (Tdh), concluded on Thursday a series of meetings held in the capital, Amman, to discuss a proposed Code of Conduct on decent working conditions in the Jordanian agricultural sector.

The Code of Conduct was developed by the Phenix Center following a comprehensive assessment of the agricultural sector based on four key areas: occupational safety and health standards, decent working conditions, child labor conditions, and gender analysis.

These meetings—which target four governorates (Amman, Madaba, Balqa, and Irbid)—are part of the “Grow Economy” project implemented by the Phenix Center, funded by the French Development Agency (AFD), in cooperation with Acted, Action Against Hunger (ACF), Terre des hommes (Tdh), ECO Consult, and the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature (RSCN), and in coordination with the National Agricultural Research Center (NARC).

The meetings brought together a group of key stakeholders, including occupational safety and health experts, members of the project’s steering and community committees, representatives of civil society organizations and international organizations active in the agricultural and environmental sectors, as well as the General Union of Workers in Agriculture and Food Industries, the Independent Union of Agricultural Workers, and representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture and the Social Security Corporation.

The meetings aimed to discuss and refine the proposed Code of Conduct, in preparation for its pilot implementation in 30 selected farms, with the goal of improving occupational safety and health standards in those workplaces.

Participants recommended expanding the scope of the Code to cover most governorates across the Kingdom and to disseminate it widely, especially among small and medium-sized farms.

The “Grow Economy” project seeks to contribute to promoting sustainable, inclusive, and decent economic opportunities for vulnerable Syrian refugees and Jordanians working in Jordan’s agricultural sector. It does so by improving working conditions and increasing access to diversified sources of income. The Phenix Center is responsible for implementing the third strategic objective of the project, which focuses on enhancing decent working conditions for workers in the agricultural sector.
