Pregnant Teacher Alleges Unfair Dismissal by Private School Due to Pregnancy
A pregnant teacher has come forward to voice her complaint after being fired by the private school she worked at, following the administration's knowledge of her pregnancy.

Speaking to a local news outlet, she revealed that despite signing a new contract for the academic year 2023-2024, the school terminated her employment soon after she presented them with a medical report confirming her pregnancy, resulting in the immediate cancellation of her contract.

Nariman Al-Shawaheen, the general coordinator of the Qom Ma’ Al Mu’alem campaign which translates into “Stand With The Teacher”, has highlighted that such rights violations are not uncommon and occur frequently.

According to Al-Shawaheen's statement to Jordan Labor Watch, several private schools inquire about the marital status of female teachers during the hiring process, and in some cases, they even demand non-pregnancy reports as a requirement.

Al-Shawaheen strongly condemned this behavior, considering it a violation of women's privacy rights and the law.

She also pointed out the lack of coordination among the social security corporation, labor ministry, and Ministry of Education, which often allows these violations to persist. Moreover, she views these procedures as immoral and a direct infringement on women's right to motherhood.

This incident reignites the issue of a statement published by another private school last month, targeting one of its employees and suggesting the need for a set period of time for pregnancy and childbirth for teachers in the institution. The statement triggered widespread discontent among many female teachers, gaining significant attention on social media and sparking protests within the community.
