Forced into Early Retirement teachers detained while Heading to Education Ministry
Jordan Labor Watch -
Today, Sunday, the Public Security Directorate Authorities detained approximately 8 teachers heading to the Ministry of Education in the capital, Amman.

The teachers, who had been forced into early retirement, intended to visit the ministry to understand why they were referred to early retirement and to advocate for their reinstatement.

According to Omar Shaban, head of the Jordanian Teachers' Syndicate (JTS) branch in Mafraq, the detained teachers had no plans to stage a sit-in.

He added that four detained teachers are from the Karak governorate and were held at the Qatraneh security center.

Shaban explained that It remains unclear whether the deputy head of the teachers' union, Dr. Nasser Al-Nawasra, and former union council member Galib Abu Qadees were also detained.

Shaban emphasized that there are no justifiable grounds for their detention, as they had no intention to engage in a sit-in, and no penalties should be imposed on them. He expressed concern over the repeated detention of teachers referred to early retirement whenever they attempt to visit the ministry. He asserted that these detentions are purportedly based on their union activities.

He further stated that such measures, including early retirement referrals, contravene the provisions of the Social Security and labor Laws, which require the employee's consent for early retirement.
